Handheld FAQ¶
Common questions about NX Redux on TrimUI handhelds. Using the Android app? See the Mobile FAQ.
Can I move my SD card between devices?¶
No. SD cards are built per device model — resolution, OSD assets and other layout differ between models. Use the Device Sync tool to carry saves, save states, settings and (optionally) ROMs across devices.
Something doesn't work after installing¶
Check your stock firmware version first. NX Redux relies on system libraries the stock firmware ships — install the official TrimUI firmware listed in Getting Started for your device, then reinstall.
I forgot my Simple Mode PIN¶
Delete .userdata/shared/enable-simple-mode from the SD card (from a
computer) to turn Simple Mode off.
Where are my screenshots and recordings saved?¶
Screenshots go to Images/Screenshots, screen recordings to
Videos/Recordings on the SD card. See
On-Screen Display.
Where are my saves?¶
Battery saves live in the Saves folder on the SD card; save states are kept
per platform under .userdata. Device Sync moves all of it between
devices for you.
Why is there no RetroAchievements hardcore mode?¶
By design. NX Redux is not an RA-approved hardcore emulator, so hardcore mode is intentionally omitted to keep your account safe. Softcore unlocks still work fully, including offline. See RetroAchievements.
A community pak misbehaves — where do I report it?¶
Not to the pak's developer — community paks are built for NextUI, not NX Redux, and their developers cannot help with NX Redux-specific behavior. See Additional Emulators.
How do I update NX Redux?¶
Use the OTA updater in Settings → About
(needs Wi-Fi). Or copy the new release's MinUI.zip (without unzipping) to
the root of your SD card, then boot. Bundled emulator and tool paks update
automatically either way. See
Getting Started.
How do I connect to the device over SSH or SFTP?¶
Turn on Settings → Developer → Enable SSH / SFTP (or Start SSH / SFTP on boot) with
Wi-Fi connected. The hint under the toggle shows the exact login line with
the device's current IP address. The connected network in
Settings → Network shows the same IP. The username is root. On Brick
and Brick Pro the password is tina; Smart Pro S needs no password.
ssh root@192.168.1.8
The same login works for SFTP, so you can copy files with a client such as
FileZilla. The SD card is at /mnt/SDCARD. See
Accessing Your Files and
Developer.
Can I use the Xbox button arrangement (confirm at the bottom)?¶
Yes. Settings → System → Button layout → Xbox swaps A/B and X/Y
everywhere — menus, apps, every emulator and PortMaster. Restart once so the
On-Screen Display follows too. The button hints can show either the letters
printed on the caps or the buttons' roles. See
Button Layout.
Bluetooth is flaky, or I want the stock Bluetooth stack back¶
A full release zip upgrades the device's Bluetooth stack on first boot (see
Bluetooth → Under the hood). If
Bluetooth misbehaves, first confirm that upgrade actually ran. It only
happens when the nextui.upgrade_bluez.*.pakz file from the release zip
is on the card at boot. Installing by copying only MinUI.zip onto an
existing card, or updating over the air from an install that never had the
file, skips it. Copy the .pakz from the release zip to the root of the SD
card and reboot to apply it.
The upgrade lives on the device's system partition, not the SD card, so swapping cards does not remove it. To return to the stock stack, reflash the official TrimUI firmware for your device.
A game won't launch — where do I start?¶
The usual suspects, in order:
- Missing BIOS — some systems need BIOS files to run at all; check the Cores & BIOS Files table for yours.
- Arcade games — wrong romset version or missing BIOS/parent zip; see the Arcade page.
- The logs — every emulator writes a log to
.userdata/<platform>/logs/<TAG>.txton the SD card (e.g..userdata/tg5040/logs/GBA.txt). The last lines usually name the problem.
Where do I report bugs or ask questions?¶
On the NX Redux GitHub repository
via Issues. For emulator problems, attach the matching log file from
.userdata/<platform>/logs/ — it makes issues much faster to diagnose.
